World of Darkness Text Game Recap: Eliot

Between March and May of last year, I had been bouncing the idea off some friends of playing a game separate from our table ventures via e-mail, IM, or text. The response I got was fairly positive, so in mid-May, we worked out that we would try to have a game via text, and I hashed out some quick rules and details after deciding on the new World of Darkness.

Our Chronicle took place in Chicago, and though we didn't make it too far into the game, I found it fun and the game actually ran for almost a year, and could have been longer if not for an extremely long hiatus breaking focus amongst the players.

In this series, I will be posting the character sheet and logs for one PC per post. Along with the character sheet, I will give the background info submitted by the player, as well as various notes from me, including their "tie" to the supernatural, explaining where I wanted to take the game with them. The ties were all made early on, and I'm not 100% sure that's where I would have gone with them as the game progressed.

The logs and character sheet are presented as-is, with typos, etc. Player text is default color.

This one is for Travis' character, Eliot.

Background: Eliot is a hood rat who grew up stealing everything he had and providing for his family that way, with the hope that he will make a better life for his 11 year old brother, Sam.

-Sam Alister, 11 year old brother

Tie: I hadn't thought of a tie for Eliot yet, though I had just become aware of Geist and had a few other ideas connected to ghosts/spirits, seeing how his dad might die.

ST: Summer is always tough for you, school feeds your brother [OOC: does he have a name?] and it's not always easy for you to hustle up food or money for it. It's gonna be time for him to wanna eat, soon, though, and hunger pains are getting the best of you, too.
Heading out for the day, your mind begins to churn over your options at scoring a quick buck...
Eliot: [Sam age:11]
after sending Sam off to school I dig through my parents wallets to see if they had any money that they hadent already spent on themselves. They had none like always. I head out trying to find food or money for dinner. I walk down the street and see the local bar to try to get someone with money to put some on a pool game. Or if anything else pick someone pocket. Anything for a meal for Sam.
it is summer time so other than sending Sam to school I left him at the house to fend for himself for the day
ST: it takes a bit of trash talking, but you finally get a non-regular riled enough to slap down $20 on the game, which you take easily. The guy either had been drinking a while, had never played pool, or you had him riled enough to throw his concentration.
At any rate, you collect Andrew Jackson with a smug grin
Eliot: after collecting the money I decided that sam was probably pritty hungry by now so I walk outside and start walking to a fast food place to pick up some quick burgers before going home.
ST: everything goes smoothly and you feel pretty good about feeding your brother. Your parents try, but living in the city and raising kids drains all their money. You guys always have a roof over your head, though
When you get home, Sam is on the couch with a comic book your mom brought home for him that someone had left at their table at the diner. Dad is sitting at the table, figuring up bills, he keeps rubbing his mouth and chin, not a good sign
Eliot: sitting next to Sam I asked him what he did that was constructive today he tells me that he went to a friens house to do drugh (smart ass) looking at dad I see that he is still looking at the check book like if he staired at it long enough somthing would change. So I went on ahead and asked (is there something wrong?) that's when he tells me (well if we don't get $500 in three days we will be living on the streets for a few weeks til next payday.) (me: is there anything I can do to help?) (dad: ya shit a gold nugget.) feeling useless I grab up my brothers comic and take it to my room to pass some time before I fall asleep
ST: a few minutes later, you hear a chair squeak across the floor, then the muffled sounds of your dad talking to your brother before the door opens and closes
Eliot: I walk into the living room to see a worried look on my brothers face. (were did dad go) he tells me that he was pissed that the land lord wouldent give us an extintion on the rent so he went to go have a talk with him. Knowing how my dad gets when he is mad I thought (better get down there before things get out of hand( on my way down to the land lords apartment I herd shouting and a grunt of pain. I burst into the door to see my land lord standing over my dads body. I look down to see if he was ok and thank god he was still breathing. ( what did you do). (land lord: you better get your dad out of here before I finish what he started) in blind rage I stand up and start swinging
ST: your dad looks pretty wrecked, but you don't really take the time to think about why until after you miss your initial flurry and feel the sharp pain as the landlord's knife sinks into your skin before he shouts "I said get the hell out! Take your worthless father, too! You have an hour to pack your shit and get the fuck out of my tenements!" [OOC: you've taken 2 lethal damage (lethal doesn't mean you'll die from it, necessarily, just it's more serious than bashing) and your dad is cut up bad and bleeding. You can continue the scene however you wish]

Eliot: I grab my dad even though he complains that he will be fine half carry half drag him to the er. Once we got there they tell me that I need to get looked at to so they lay me in the bed next to my dad for a day to recover (at least it's a place to sleep tonight) I sweet talk the nurse to let my mom and brother stay with us in are room but it will only last till my dad gets better or worse. Only thing to do now is Waite and see. [sorry it took so long to get this sent. I want to play but I keep forgetting about it.]
ST: the attending nurse takes offense at your sweet-talking and boots your mom and brother out of the room, pushing your brother a little when he goes to hug you and your dad, then telling them they'll have to stay in the waiting area ifthey wish to stick around. You also realize, due to listening to doctors, etc., that your dad is pretty much on death's door, though, as always, has a brave face on for everyone else's benefit

As much as I tried, this was all I could get from Travis. I did find his willingness to narrate other characters to be exciting, as it gave me things to work on.

The Age of Worms, Session 16

This week, as the party started to find someplace private to commence a post-combat cuddle, we were set upon by a hideous monster, about twice the size of Sagt (who stands at almost 8'!), bearing vicious snapping claws instead of hands and hideous sharp teeth, both of which it put to good use quickly.

Though its path further into the room was blocked by Filge's zombie owlbear (thankfully), there was still room for the party to maneuver around the beast, Sagt going to its side and Mullins skirting through a side door to go behind the thing.

In the early seconds of combat, the beast tore into Sagt and the zombie, nearly rending both of them apart before the arcanists (Filge and Rosebud) began using wands to pepper the thing with weak spells. Mullins got into position to attack and began to deal hefty wounds to the monster while Sagt and the zombie slowly chipped away at it and kept it distracted.

Able found home with his crossbow, then advanced to heal the Sagt, but was ensnared by the grasping columns, and had a hard time escaping during some of the fight. In the end, perseverance and a little luck kept those engaging the beast in melee on their feet, and we were able to take the thing down.

A little butchering and some noshing by Sagt, who offered everyone a bite of the monster, happened while the others checked all the wares in the library we had found earlier. Once everything worth taking was found, the group bedded down to an uneventful night, then made our way out of the tunnels, with the aid of our rope of climbing to make the final ascent, since the elevator shaft had seemingly been sabotaged.

Taken into custody by the guard until we were OK'd by Allustan, we then went our separate ways, Mullins paying debts, and all of us acquiring better equipment, and generally just enjoying being in a peaceful surrounding (except Able, who cannot gain better equipment). We all agreed to journey together further under the employ of Allustan as a sort of personal guard, as he makes his way to Blackwall Keep on the other side of the Mistmarsh.

Cast of Characters
Sagt, Varag 4 (Racial levels) - Me
Mullins, Gnome Rogue 3/Wizard 2 - Paul
Rosebud, Gnome Warmage 4 - Paul (we're allowed to have 2 characters)
Able Nightengale, Human Healer 4 - David
Filge, Human Wizard (Necromancer) 5(?) - NPC

Thoughts: Sagt found a little bit of frustration and some avoidance from him by the locals since he's a goblinoid. This is the first time he's really encountered it, and has dealt with it mostly by staring at the person reacting or one of his tribemates. It was fun to play his reactions and general trying to fit in/not knowing he doesn't fit in. Luckily, the party is there to be his "handler" and make excuses when needed.

An Apology Regarding the Text Game Recaps

I would like to say sorry for how some of the formatting on the "logs" section of the recaps has turned out. In many cases, I can't find what is causing the problems.

This is awesome, because Magneto is one of my favorite villains of all time. I'm happy to see that the more intelligent villains are in the mid-to-high levels. Cain Marko snuck in high on the list, though.

Background: Strung out druggie. The always-twitching type. Gotta get a hit of something. Tried out a drug one day and liked it (led to addiction, though addicted more to the use of drugs than any one drug, in particular.) Stayed the course after that, but tried (tries?) to fight it.

-Elvin Watson, victim (by loss of family by the "Demon" of Cabrini-Green), drug dealer

Tie: Infernal. Jamaal has gained the attention of a demon due to his addiction; the demon suspecting that he would never seek to be free of, or would be too weak willed to fight the spirit. Think Fallen meets Candyman.

Logs

ST: "Your personal effects, Mr. [OOC: your character needs a last name]," said the officer as she slid them under the steel grate towards you. Afer 72 hours, you were finally being released. Those days without a hit of anything has been Hell.
They brought that doctor in, trying to tell you you're crazy, but you saw him, he's back! That terrible demon with the hook hand has come back to Cabrini-Green to claim more lives.
Of course, you just told the cops and their doc you were high, and now you're walking free...off to find a fix
Jamaal: "I need a fix, dammit" don't really care what. Just something.
[what time of day is it]
ST: [OOC: mid-afternoon. also, did you say that or think it? The thing in quotes, I mean?]
Jamaal: [the quote remark was him saying it to himself. Thinking out loud but away from the cops of course]
ST: you find yourself wandering the projects of your neighborhood, hitting up a couple of dealers, but everyone knows you got pinched and want nothing to do with you for a bit until they know you didn't turn narc. Coming up to the stairs leading up to your next dope slinger, you stop. Buzzing fills your ears, this is the tell of the "demon" of Cabrini-Green
Jamaal: [going off previous encounters with the demon, is it violent? Does it ignore me? What do I know about it?]
ST: [OOC: the "demon" is a serial killer that sruck in the early 90s, witnesses and evidence points to a meathook being the weapon. You've seen him, once back then, once recently. Doesn't appear to have aged. Tall black man, wielding meathook, black duster and black clothes underneath, black boots. The buzzing of insects always accompany, according to stories
ST: the sound of the buzzing appears to be coming from a mass of flies and yellowjackets around what could be spilt soda, unlil you see the next drip from the stairs...red, it's blood, and fairly fresh
Jamaal: "well fuck a lot of that" don't need the cops on me again. Especially so soon. And given my luck with finding a dealer so far, this won't look good. So he makes his way back the stairs and attempts to hightail it out of there without drawing too much attention to himself
ST: "J, what the hell, man?! What'd you do, man?! Where's all that blood coming from?! Why's all the blood there, man?! Is my baby okay? What'd you do, man?!" it's Elvin, the dealer you had come to see. The sight of so much blood has sent him into hysterics, and you know he has a gf and daughter that live with him
Jamaal: "look man, it wasn't me" says J in a slight panic. "I don't know what's going on. I went up there looking for you and...and..fuck man! It's so much blood!"
ST: Elvin draws a pistol from his waistband and rushes up the stairs, nearly slipping in it before reaching his door, then expelling his previous meal on his shoes. A low wail issues from his lips and he starts mumbling incoherencies that turn into "Help! Help! Oh, lord! Somebody please help me. They killed my people, man!"
Jamaal: with that, I'll walk off. I don't need to be involved with the police again so soon after getting out.
ST: you get a few blocks before hearing sirens headed that way. A detective's unmarked car speeds by you and a chill goes down your spine as you see the "demon" reflected in the windows of the car, placing him a few paces from you, blood dripping from his hook, but when you look, he isn't there, just random pedestrians. Nonetheless, as the sound of sirens fade, you also hear the fading hum of buzzing insects

Jamaal: I'm gonna head homw and rest. I think I desere alittle after dealing with the cops and coming onto a murder scene

[do I have any smokes on me?]
Cigarettes or anything?]
ST: [Yeah, that can be assumed]
Jamaal: Taking out a smoke and just sitting back in a chair “what the fuck was up with today? Just got out of jail, can’t get a high now and then that shit
…wtf demon killer person” take a long drag from the smoke and looks around at his place. “And I still gotta take out the damn trash”
ST: since this is Chicago, your night is filled with the sound of sirens, but none coming your way, thankfully. A night’s rest in your own bed gives you a measure of comfort after the eventful day you’ve just had.

Jamaal: [do I have cell phone?]
ST: [OOC: it’s reasonable that you’d have one, but I’m gonna say it’s a Go phone, no plan.]
Jamaal: [do I have any minutes on it?]
ST: [OOC: sure, though not many. Enough for a handful of calls]
Jamaal: pulls out the phone and runs through his contacts. Adter the day he’s had, he needs a good high.
ST: you’re finally able to find a guy that’s holding after exhausting just a quarter of your remaining minutes [putting you at about 6 more calls left before you’re out of credit], though it’s a 13 block trip to the far side of Garfield Park

Admittedly, I knew nothing about GoPhones, or how minutes worked when I adjudicated the use in one of my replies to Steve, and though that's not how modern cell credit works, I liked the tension that could be created by slowly losing touch with people. Also, though asked for repeatedly, I never got a last name for Jamaal. Coming next, Eliot.
