It's Me Again, Margaret...

I'm back from the far reaches of No-Net-At-Home, which is near Didn't-Think-To-Post-Via-Mobile.

Needless to say, I've "missed" a lot, but some things are still worth mentioning, and I might even come back to them at a later date and expound.

First of all, for good or ill, the local brick and mortar has a new owner, a guy named Jacob whom I've honestly only barely made the acquaintance of. I do believe he will be opening for business officially (after a brief renovation this past week) on Monday. I wish nothing but good luck to him and his crew, and I will continue to support local gaming, and plan to give them my business.

Also, tabletop gaming seems to have fallen off quite a bit of late. Taylor runs a Pathfinder game on Tuesdays at the shop, Paul and Angela have alternating D&D games on Wednesday, and I run Scion on Thursday. Of these games, I only can make Paul's and my own, leaving me with less gaming than I would like. I contribute quite a lot of the seeming decrease in rpgs to the fact that many gamers are only interested in Magic. Steve C moving hurts, too, as he was always ready to jump into games.

The last thing of note in the time I have been away is Wizards of the Coast's announcement of the 5th Edition of Dungeons & Dragons (known as D&D Next,) and that they are wanting to approach the community to help draft the rules by taking in feedback on what actual players of the game want out of their tabletop experience.

I find this round of "help us make the game" very similar to the work that was put into 3rd Edition, and that gives me a glimmer of hope. Personally, after an extended and rigorous play experience with 4th Edition, I was left wanting, and that was a difficult pill to swallow when I had a love of the brand.

At any rate, we'll only have to wait and see what we get.

Back to the Table at Last

Just from reading past posts, it's no surprise that tabletop rpgs are a great passion of mine.

I don't get all in a funk or anything when I'm not able to play them, but I do enjoy most opportunities to game, and will do so when able. Thus, I'm very happy to finally have games going again for the first time since the first of November.

John C. has decided to run a Pathfinder Forgotten Realms game at Batesville Gaming Center on an alternating Tuesday/Wednesday schedule. The game, originally, was going to be a Dragonlance campaign, but without the source material needed, the setting quickly shifted to Westgate, in the Forgotten Realms.

I'll likely post again about this game, but would like to put it in another post since 1) the party is primarily evil in alignment, and 2) this is my first time playing Pathfinder, and I would like to get a few sessions in before I make a comment about the campaign/system from a player's perspective.

I will say, however, that there have been two sessions, the first of which largely consisted of character creation, and then presented our first hook. The second took place on Saturday, and I was unable to attend due to having no ride. The next session is scheduled for tomorr...today, and apparently completely new players to the game devised our plans of action. I'm interested!

On a related note, there's a possibility that I'll be picking my own Forgotten Realms Pathfinder game back up, but no details have really been hashed out.

And further, I've been kicking around the idea of starting something else up on another night, once I've gotten a new vehicle, but it's really too early to tell with that.

A Pleasant Surprise

Yesterday, while catching up on The Alexandrian, on Justin's November 20th post about his Gamma World game, I was curious when first seeing the illustration of the Swarm Hound accompanying the post, since the art style was familiar to me, and then I was very happy to see that I had guessed right when reading the credits given: Joshua Diffey.

I was further pleased to see upon clicking through to the Earth Delta link given, that Josh had contributed the art for what is, practically, a full game, one which I know would be something he, as a gamer, would be behind.

If anyone reading this has followed my blog from the start, the "Josh" you see randomly in the comments is the same guy. I've known him for about a decade now, and consider him a friend. He's a great person, a great gamer, and a very talented artist.

I recommend for anyone reading to click through to Earth Delta, if for nothing else than the art. (Though if you're a fan of science fantasy and post-apocalyptic settings, a la Thundarr, then you'll likely appreciate the game, as well.) If you are impressed with his work, you might also want to check out the gaming company he helped found, Pwn! Productions, and check out his old webcomic, Yoda: Padawan Jedi.

A Few Thoughts On A Game I Was Invited To...

As I mentioned last post, I have been invited to join a group that's playing through a 12th level 3.5-only campaign.

This could be fun. Epic (not in game-rule-sense) characters, trying to stabilize the world in the aftermath of war! Or cleaning up the remnants of the dark forces before they can rebuild their most devastating weapons! Or resealing the wards that lock down the ancient terror(s) that one army was trying to unleash upon the world!

Sounds cool, right? Any way that could go would be awesome, but the bad thing about the campaign is that, try as I might, I can't get any info about the setting from the person that runs the game. Info that even a character as high level as 12th would know. Not even day-to-day stuff.

Not only that, but I also can't get the information I need to make a character, so that I can bring something to the table and not have to drag the game down with time-consuming character choices.

This seems to be for multiple reasons. First, the person running the game is apparently writing a book, and seems to think that even IP that doesn't belong to her is her IP, and thus, is wary of sharing anything that could aid and expedite her game (character creation away from the table) and also seems to make arbitrary calls on what is and is not allowed in the game.

Granted, these calls could very well be made to uphold the flavor of the setting, but I just feel that this person is falling into a trap that many novice GMs fall into... the "My Game Is So Cool" trap. This is characterized, variously, by different things that GMs do to make sure the PCs don't mess up their campaign worlds.

Things like...
  • GM PCs, characters created and ran by the GM to railroad the group into not doing things that the GM feels would spoil their world (i.e., takeovers, assassinations, etc.) These characters are generally characterized by being created outside the boundaries of player creation rules.
  • Intense control of character options through every step of creation. On the outside, one might say that every GM does this, but usually not to the same extent. In these cases, very few limitations are actually communicated, but then crop up at every stage of character creation, limiting class, race, spells, and even feats and skills.
  • Setting Static, in which no matter what you may do to disrupt person, place, or thing X, there is always answer Y to counter it, whether that be the person being immensely more powerful than they should be, protective wards on the location, or unforeseen NPCs ready to jump into any vacancies created by the PCs before they, themselves, have a chance to do so.
The fallacy here is that by putting up these things, that the GM invariably sees as non-restrictive, they are choking the life out of their own creativity and the creativity of their players, which can lead to bitterness between players, or between players and GMs.

The fact that it is a fallacy is upheld by the fact that, no matter how many limitations are put into place, the players, if they are not having fun, will begin to make the campaign fun for themselves, or will eventually end up dropping out of the group. To quote a classic paraphrase in the gaming community, "No campaign survives contact with the players."

Having said all that, it may seem that I am being very derisive toward the game and the persons running and playing in it, but that's not my intent. I'm merely putting forward an at-a-glace opinion of what I see.

I certainly do hope that the game is fun, and that all participating enjoy themselves, but ultimately, I feel that the game will fail on the points I have presented above. Already, one campaign was aborted after only a few meetings, and I just feel that, perhaps, there is too much on the plate of someone who seems new to the task of GMing.

Happy Halloween!

First off, let me wish everyone a Happy Halloween, and I hope that if anyone goes out tonight with their kids or otherwise, that they are safe and have a blast.

Gaming, for me, has fallen off a little, as our group currently doesn't have a place to play regularly, but there are still some things on the plate that I hope will continue.

First of those things is Magic. I've been playing quite a bit more, and I really love the new set, Innistrad. Though there's really nothing new and innovative in the set, I do think it balances the comfortable play speeds of older sets with the rising power curve in cards that have been seen in the past few years.

Playing Limited in Innistrad is a blast, also, and that's always good with a new set.

Second, Paul has begun a game on Wednesdays at Batesville Gaming Center using the 3.x rules, and me, David, John C, Taylor, and Steve have all hopped on board. John C has yet to make a character, but so far we have a Spellthief, a Marshall, a Dragon Shaman, and a Paladin of Tyranny/Hexblade.

I know a little of the story, but I'll not post here til Paul lets everyone in on it.

Next are the two games our group has going... David's Dark Heresy game, and a new Pathfinder game I'm running set in the Forgotten Realms (the nation of Halruaa, to be exact.)

Obviously, with me running a new game, that means the Wilderlands game has come to an end, and indeed it has. With a TPK, no less. I may eventually get around to posting what happened there, but right now, I'm working fairly hard on putting together what I hope will be a fun game for my players, and will give them an opportunity to explore the Realms!

The characters are an eclectic mix, and have yet to have their mettle tested, but time will tell for our Rock Gnome Gunslinger (Steve,) Fire Genasi Sorceror[Wordcaster] (David,) Human Monk (Taylor,) and Human Bard[Dervish Dancer] (Angela.)

So far, all they've done is met some powerful wizards and delivered invitations to a number of them for a party of some sort. Action packed!

David's Dark Heresy game has furthered only a little, as we've slogged through slow investigation, and ultimately lost Steve's Guardsman to a grenade party that Taylor decided to throw for some warp zombies. We have yet to see the conclusion of our venture onto Sinophia, and hopefully can solve the mysteries of the Archenemy that hide there!

I've also been throwing around the possibility of running various other games, either via text, like picking up the WoD game, or at the shop, etc.

Finally, I'm going to touch a little on a game that I have been invited to in my next post. It's ran by some former patrons of my shop. The game is presented as a 12th level high-fantasy campaign set in a world that, apparently, has just experienced war.

Love is in the Air...Springtime, Wilderlands Style!

And so tonight was another foray for our recently expanded group into the Wilderlands!

The party has recently returned from an excursion west, past the Adder Copse as far as the village of Trenth, where they declined to intervene with a political dispute between two local powers, that could possibly involve a third.

Upon returning to Bugbear Falls, however, it quickly became apparent that things were rapidly changing in the political scene of the keep, and that there were too many things happening for it to all just be coincidence and normal restructuring.

First, it was found that Rayyid the merchant's nephew, Sayib, was hung from spikes affixed to the inner bailey walls after being killed for a failed assassination attempt on Dal Lago, and that Rayyid has since been M.I.A..

Then, after Chas had a less than friendly meeting with Vic Tappas, the Bailiff of the keep, and Praetor Donnlo, the former Corporal of the Watch, it is discovered that River Wilds, the Captain of the Watch, was "promoted" to Watch Errant Captain...a duty that removes him from the city on an almost constant basis, and that Corporal Donnlo has become Captain of the Watch.

And if that wasn't enough, Honorable Justice Sollas excommunicated Gabrielle, though his magic didn't strip her Paladin abilities, giving creedence to the fact that something has gone terribly wrong, and he is not acting in the graces of Iomedae any longer.

All of this culminated in tempers flaring and inquisitive minds, leading the group to follow Lucius' lead....to the Fey Gate?

And so our intrepid adventurers set out into the wilds to find the Gate, much to a nervous Chas' chagrin, since he and Jadazh had been warned to not trespass into the affairs of the Fey.

Once there, the party encountered a Basilisk that had taken the shallow cave that the Gate was in as its home, but quick work was made of the beast as Lucius moved forward and, getting the jump on it, killed it swiftly with a well placed hand-crossbow bolt. (This after peppering it with a round from his double crossbow and then winning initiative only to crit, with a kill on the charts!)

And there we left off, with our heroes just outside the cave, save Jadazh, who is still back in Bugbear Falls with the party's NPCs.

Steve couldn't make it for the 2nd week in a row due to being in Michigan, but we have two new players in Dave P. and Travis, and both are a welcome addition to the group.

Current Cast of Characters
Chas DeLong, Male Human Fighter 6 - David B.
Lucius Ember, Male Dhampir Inquisitor 3 - Taylor
Gabrielle Dianthe, Female Aasimar Paladin of Iomedae 4 - Angela
Morg, Male Half-Orc Barbarian 2 - Dave P.
Amberlin, Half-Elf Monk 2 - Travis
Sa'eh, Oracle 3 - David B. controlled NPC

You Might Notice...

...that the Facebook widget is gone.

Many of you, and perhaps all of you that read this, know by now that I pulled the plug on Greathammer Games.

My reasons for doing this were manifold, but when it boils down to it, the primary reason was that I dove into business at the wrong time. There are and were home matters that need to be addressed. I had emptied my savings before getting a job at the clinic, and after paying a few other bills, I didn't have the financial backing that I should have had before taking on the task. I had very little time to continuously keep my affairs in order, and many parts of my life were lacking due to how little time I actually had, not to mention what lack of sleep was doing to me.

I'm not usually one to open up about my personal life, but I think people have gotten the wrong impression about why the shop closed. Yes, money was tight, but ultimately, money wasn't the reason I closed the shop. The timing just wasn't right for me.

Does this mean that when things change, I'll jump back in? I can't answer that at the moment, because I don't see things changing for a long while, but I do know that everything is ok.

I want everyone to know that everything is ok, too. I'm not in debt up to my ears or dodging bill collectors. I'm able to meet my bills, and only had to pay some taxes after the closing. I don't want anyone to feel they have to say "Sorry," I guess. I don't know why you're sorry. Nothing is wrong. Sure, not having a game shop sucks. It's cool having that.

But...it's also cool that my game group still gets together on Tuesday and Wednesdays, and it's cool that Tony still runs his game on Sundays, and it's cool that we can head up to Mountain Home and see Chris and the gang up at Portal.

Gaming doesn't stop, so everything is ok.

Eventful & Tragic

Hello, all.
As I write this, it's been three months since my last post. That's a long time, I know, and believe me, it's been eventful and tragic.

As some of you already know, in June I took over ownership of Bald Man Games. The shop is now known as Greathammer Games, and my goal is to continue offering the games, gaming supplies, and available space for gaming that Tony had offered, and I've set things in motion to increase product and in-store traffic.

Having a game store in Independence County is important to me, and something I am going to try very hard to improve upon at every opportunity. Thank you to everyone who continues to give the shop patronage.

That explains quite a bit of the "eventful," and tells why I've not been posting in the past three months, and now onto the tragic....

Recently, we lost a regular fixture to the gaming community. His name was Jeremy Wood, and he passed away after injuries sustained training to be an amateur wrestler, which is something he enjoyed and was passionate about, which makes it all the more tragic when coupled with some of the circumstances (which I won't go into here.)

I'm not going to pad this with emotion or false niceties. In truth, most of us were just acquaintances to Jeremy, and not true friends, but he has been in our thoughts, and he will be missed. No one deserves to have their life taken from them in such a way. I, and everyone at Greathammer Games extend our condolences to his family and friends at this time.

In addition to losing Jeremy, a close friend of mine passed recently as a result of a car accident, and another friend had supposedly died to the same circumstances, but the latter was a joke in terrible taste.

Needless to say, stress and worry have been in great abundance here.
You'll hear more from me in the future, though, so keep checking in!

Dark Ho-Hum

So, as the time for the Dark Sun game approaches, it just seems like the enthusiasm and want to participate is running on low.

Attendance is low, attention to various other things seem to crop up during a time when character creation and realization should be happening, and there's just an overall "meh" attitude swimming around.

Perhaps it's just fatigue. I realize it's the holidays and such, but nobody is even talking about the game. Nobody is really discussing their characters or the whats/whys/hows of where they want their characters or story to go. This is highly unusual.

So, I'm gonna bring it up to the group on Tuesday. We're supposed to start then, but if there's a hitch, then it will just make the game lose some of its appeal. We just knocked back a year's worth of some D&D'n, so maybe we need a taste of something else for a short while to get back into gaming.

I dunno, we'll see. It's kinda frustrating/saddening.

12.26.2009

Other Gaming

I'd like to add that I'm currently not doing any other gaming other than Tuesday nights, though I've been trying to make it to David's Dark Heresy game, and I have a standing invitation to Tony's 4e game, and I'd like to play in it, but I've just not been able to.
I've got a new job now and hopefully once I get used to the hours and such, I can get back into the swing of things as far as gaming goes.
If you know of any non-D&D gaming in the Batesville, AR area, please let me know. The D&D rut I spoke of a while back is still kinda grating on me.

9.04.2009

Dark Resurgence!

I come bearing joyous news!

The Most Holy and Grand Emperor of Mankind has seen fit to grant us a boon in the form of another player!

Kristy, a girl I used to go to high school with, and who has recently started doing some gaming at the shop in John's 4e game, decided to get in on Dark Heresy with David, Steve, and I, and rolled up a Psyker on Monday.

The group is excited to have another player, since that helps the game out alot. Without a fair sized troupe, I find I'm hard pressed to be excited about a game. It's an odd brainheadthing that has developed from always having large groups, I think.

Anyway, I'm also excited about having a psyker in the group. Justin had made one at one point, but only joined us twice for the game, if I recall correctly. I think they're one of the most interesting classes out there, and I would like to see the potential of one in actual play.

David and I were discussing multiclassing systems in Dark Heresy, and I'm gonna see if he would be interested in coming up with a working system for that that we would both be happy with.

Oh, Tony mentioned today that someone else was asking about Dark Heresy, so we might possibly have yet another player jumping in. I'm all for that, too. Now all we need is to get Josh and Taylor back in. *nods*

A Quick Wish of Good Luck to Some Friends

I wanted to take a moment to extend a congratulations and a wish of good luck to my pals at Pwn Productions on the dedication they show to putting out fun, playable games and in their future endeavors with their products and gaming, in general.

Those of you who stay up on this blog know that Josh D. is a regular commenter and has recently announced that they will be in talks with Troll Lord Games to get their game ThunderPwn published.

I've known Jeff and Josh for about 4 years now and they've always been great people to game with and just be around. (I still owe you after passing out on your porch, Jeff! First time I ever passed out, though, so it's a milestone event you witnessed, lol.)

Anyway, good luck, guys, and to Paul and Jacob, and hopefully your game can see the amount of hands it's meant to.

For everyone who is interested (and that should be everyone who reads this blog), check the guys and their games out at PwnProductions, and help give support to local game design.

btw, we still need to game again or something! No, I won't shut up about it. Heh

8.24.2009

ThunderPwn!

So, a while back, my pals up in Mt. View came to Bald Man Games and demoed ThunderPwn! for those there. Sadly, I wasn't able to be around that day, and I've not heard much from the guys other than it "seems really cool."

So, in your opinion, how did it go, Josh D.?

I know you guys have put alot of work into the Pwn! series of games and I'm definitely interested in hearing what's in the works. Feel free to comment or email me, man.

Dark Hiatus?

David H. has officially bowed out of the Dark Heresy game for marital duties, so barring seeing what we can do about teleconferencing with guys who have moved, it might be a while yet before we do anything. Two weeks have gone by. David and I have been trying to brainstorm a solution. I think I might take a board game with me tomorrow or something to pass the time. *shrugs*

7.21.2009

No Dark Heresy And Another Common Gameshop Gripe

Well, no game last night because I would have liked to have started the game with more than 2 people and before 10pm. I'm not casting blame or anything, I know as much as anyone else that obligations can get in the way, so that's not a problem.

I do think, however, that I'm just gonna stop waiting and run my games at X time and if people aren't at the table ready to go, they can jump in when they are able. I really wish all of the games at the shop were run like that. It would be alot more appealing, I think, to more than just me if the games started a bit earlier during the week.

I've stepped my Tuesday game up some in time, but Monday and Wednesday's games suffer from "We'll Wait A Bit Longer For..." As gameshop games, I don't think that any campaign currently ran really hinges on any one character (or shouldn't,) so "ghosting" them til they show up shouldn't be a problem.

Anyway, it's a minor gripe. Not like most of us wouldn't be up late, anyway. Monday is an exception for me. I'm not sure why, but I always seem to feel the most tired on Monday nights.

3.22.2009

A Correction On The Warhammer Campaign

So, it appears I was wrong on who was playing in the campaign and what they were playing, to boot. I had misunderstood some conversations I had with people, but here's how it stands as far as who is playing what...
Casey - Dark Elves
John C. - Demons of Chaos
Jon R. - Lizardmen
Chris - Lizardmen
Tony - Tomb Kings
CJ - Empire
Paul - Ogres
David - Dwarfs
Taylor - Orcs and Goblins
George - Skaven
Me - Vampire Counts

So far, Tony has taken a territory from Casey and Chris has defended an attack by Casey. Lots of games coming up in the next few days, including me trying to take a territory from CJ, Taylor attacking Tony, Tony attacking Paul, and lots of other crazy junk.
JoshD, the return of XenoPWN would so rock in my book. I'd definitely be up for that. btw, you need to get your ass to the new location sometime. The shop is now tres cool!
sohj, Wood Elves would be interesting. You should roll that. My counts thirst for elf blood! Mwahaha!

3.13.2009

I'm Alive! Alive! *cue mad scientist laugh*

So yeah...I've really been sucking it up on keeping this updated, but I thought I'd throw some stuff down and go from there.

Just to fill you in on things that I've been up to, I've got the whole school thing going on, plus I'm trying to find a job to supplement the shop thing, and I've been sick for the past 2 weeks, so YeY that.

On the plus side, I'm getting better and gaming is great lately. I'll be making individual posts for each of the games in the order we play them during the week to catch everything up, but for now I'll just give a once-over on other things that have been/will be going on at the shop.

We've started another Magic league, this one is Mirrodin/Darksteel and Taylor has a pretty promising lead over the pack. I admit, I was excited when Mirrodin was proposed for league play, but my pulls were kinda disheartening. I don't really have the card power for anything I'd call "solid" in a format like we're playing. I've won some games, but consistency is failing for me. C'est la vie, I suppose.

On a more promising note, we'll be starting a Warhammer campaign soon, and I'm eager to field my Vampire Counts. There's quite a few people on board for this and I think it's gonna be a blast. The armies that are going to be fielded run almost the full selection, too. Taylor is going to be running Orcs & Goblins, Casey has Dark Elves, Teawok has Dark Elves (if he's playing), Jon R. is running Lizardmen, as is Chris. Norman is marching his Empire to war, CJ will likely be running Lizardmen, Tony has Tomb Kings, John has Demons of Chaos. David and Josh need to play! That would be spectacular. *nods in the affirmative*

A little after the fantasy campaign starts, a 40k campaign will be starting up, as well. I'm not sure who all will be playing in that, but I know David is running his Necrons, Tony has Tau, Fred will likely bring his Space Marines up, and there will surely be more. I'd personally like to roll Eldar, and I know Taylor is interested in Imperial Guard. I guess we'll see how that goes, but it should be pretty interesting.

12.19.2008

Apologies to the Game Group

I'm truly sorry for not showing up yesterday for Vampire. I had a headache and lay down to ease it at around 2 and slept through til well after game time.
I hate letting people down, and I know I have the character sheets for that game, so I feel horrible about it all. The weight of my absence registered as soon as I came to fully.

Hopefully we can make up lost ground when the game resumes in the new year.

12.08.2008

Happy....so happy...

Yeah, I'm not dead yet, I've just been too lazy to update in a while. I'm gonna run through a short recap of what's been happening, but first, I'm going to explain why I've not been on posting as much.

A couple of my friends have caught the Warhammer bug, but they're running Warhammer 40k, and I'm doing fantasy, and I've made it a point to finish my Vampire Counts army before I even buy the Eldar codex. I've been painting and assembling quite a bit lately.

Also, I'm playing Magic pretty regularly, and preparing for an Elder Dragon Highlander tournament that's coming up on the 20th, so deck building has been taking alot of time that I could have spent on here. I plan to get back to posting after every game starting this week, though.

Now for recaps...

  • The Drow War - The party made it to the Ragged Man and got information on where the Starborn items are held and more information on their destinies. This game has been put on hiatus until after the holidays due to family commitments.
  • Bastions of the Broken Road - The group made their way out of the hold of Durgeddin and after relaxing for a while, found employ under the flamboyant Baron Althom, who they accompanied to the town of Brindinford. There, they encountered all manner of evils, from Khyberspawn to the alien beings of Xoriat and, through befriending a rogue band of shifters, were able to remain somewhat safe while rooting out evil. A few PCs found death while in the city.
  • Gnomad and the Masters of the Multiverse - After completing the locking of all the Inner planes, we went to Mechanus as the first stop of the Outer, where we have been for weeks, trying to figure out how to improve the Gnomad with a planar navigation system and trying to lock the plane. It's looking like Sigil will be our next destination, as we must go there to find a formula for the Modrons which holds the key for manipulation of the Hourglass on Mechanus. It's frustrating.
  • Vampire - The neonates have struggled to find more clues to the murders of the Nosferatu primogen and the Gangrel sheriff, but the only information that's turned up is that the Tremere are either responsible or are covering up something, and that there is a Sabbat influence in the city which may or may not be involved. We lost Doug's Gangrel in a raid on a location we knew to hold Sabbat, and Taylor's Brujah had his memory rewritten with Dominate, so that he thought he was Sabbat as well. This eventually led to his diablerization of my character followed by mayhem. He blew up an Elysium in the city and this week's game will have the aftermath of that incident.

That's the gist of things. With more detailed writeups coming, maybe everyone will be able to catch up fairly well. For now, however, I'm going to bed because I have to work a double tomorrow. YeY inventory!

btw, give yourself 2 cool points if you got the reference in the header.
